New player, looking for advice

I've played a couple of surface characters, and thought I would give the underdark a try, as I rather like the underdark's lore. Assuming that drow were quite likely already very well represented, I decided to try a duergar instead.

I started off in Sschindrylyn, but the city seems to be lacking most of the basic services, and the lake sharks grant very little xp. So I explored around a bit and found the camp, where I decided to play for a while. I was most pleased that the beetles granted better xp.

I was just looking for some general advice on things I should do while playing this character, things I should try, places I should go. I hung around the camp for a bit, but I noticed a few drow females going around asking all the non-drow who owned them, so I figured my duergar would just go ahead and scoot before he got sold into slavery. Is the camp off-limits to all non-drow unless they're slaves, from a flavor standpoint? Should I expect that my duergar would get executed for being there without a collar? I am curious, because it appears the camp has more services than Schindrylyn and also seems to be serving as a bigger RP hub.

Are there any other players of Duergar I should seek out, or am I basically alone?

IC most will expect you to either be/become a slave (won't happen without your OOC consent though), or enter some kind of standing mercenary relationship with one of the groups or more powerful individuals in camp.
Non-Drow "free agents" wannabes that expect to just come and go and mouth off to Drow as they please (esp. Drow females, esp. priestesses) don't seem to last very long.

Other groups of Duergars, that I know : clan Bloodbeard (subservient to Drow clan Dabel'Kith), and Wyrmsbane (ennemies).

My duergar has a good intelligence and wisdom. He knows better than to wander into a camp full of drow and call them all "spider-humpers" or something. In the brief time I was in the camp he just drank some ale and had a brief conversation with a human slave who was looking at him.

Hopefully I can get into contact with the other Duergar. Being a priest of Deep Duerra, my Duergar would rather go down fighting than to be a slave again, after all the centuries his people spent in servitude to the mind-flayers. Mercenary work, on the other hand, is a much more palatable option.

I like your character. there is some Duergar as a servant of one of the Drow House - Dabel'kith. Look in the Underdark Forum, there shall be some post there.

Not on non - drow in camp are slaves, but when two orcs came in with collars they tend to be questioned. One with a generic collar.

i didnt mean you should join dabel'kith. im just saying do what you want an enjoy....
