| Howdy all! I have finally decided to give a drow a try. If you should see a tiny bard by the name of Kel'olgaun a wandering about, be patient, as I don't have a firm grasp of "drowberish" yet (I know xas, nau, vendui, and a few other words). I also think that drow bard should be an interesting challenge, balancing the friendliest class with the meanest race . If anyone has any quick advice on drow in general, or on how bards fit into their culture, I will be like a sponge! Looking forward to seeing you in game, and learning the language and culture a bit more! It is a bit intimidating as a tiny male to interact with scary females, but as a charismatic bard, I may just try ;p. Lloth tu Malla | |

| The only pure Bard drow I know are Nanga (Vilesinger) and Za'nara (Fuzziebunny). I think either would be happy to help OOC if you have questions about bardic drow | |

| I'm not sure exactly what the lore on male Bae'queshel is, but seeing as males are usually trained in the arcane, and occasionally allowed temple positions (though not as priests), I could imagine it being possible for a devout and powerful male bard to find power that way.
A more conventional bard would probably either find himself as a retainer of a noble house; entertaining arm-candy and occasional spy, or as a underworld figure; associated with thieves (perhaps Vhaeraunites, if he's the swashbuckling womanizer type) or a group like the Bregan D'aerthe.
Another role I could see a Bard playing is as a loremaster; associated with one of the Faern or Sartglin academies.
Regardless, welcome to the Underdark...

| You are welcome to contact me at any time with questions regarding Drow culture, words you do not know the meanings to or any other Under Dark related subject matter.
here's a quick list of words you need to know to survive in the UD:
Vendui - hello Aluve - goodbye Del'heen - ofcourse Usstan - I Ussta - my Usdossa - Yourself Dos - You Jaluk - Male Jaluken - Males, plural Jalil - Girl (insult for a male to call female or for a lower ranking female to call a higher ranking female) Jabbress - Mistress (Respectful greeting for women you do not know the rank of) Rothe - Slave Illythiri- Drow Darthirii - Elf Iblith - excrement (insult)
Yath'abban - Junior Priestess Yathrin - Senior Priestess Yath'tallar - High Priestess Ulath'taller - Head Priestess
I probably missed some of the pronouns in there but that's the basics of what you might need to read what others are typing.
There are tons of ranks within the houses as well but you can learn those a little later after you're comfortable with reading drowglish. Personally I try to avoid using the Pronouns because it can make things really difficult or awkward to read with sentences like "I thought I told you to do this for me."

You've got a good two weeks to ask as many questions as you want and learn just the basics to surviving, generally our group is quite patient with people who want to learn the correct lore. I imagine any drow player will help you with any questions, Dabel'kith players certainly will.

| I was walking around, and encountered a kivvel rothe and female drow, who turned out also to be a slave. I was surprised, and decided, since I am not a sleep, to be an IC jerk and watch them fight beetles for entertainment. Then it hit me: I am not a member of the noble houses, yet... does that make me essentially only an unclaimed slave? Should I pick a house that I came from, and attempt to transfer? Should I have discussed this with ladywolfenstein beforehand and started my character with a dabel'kith surname? I am not sure exactly how drow houses would "recruit" new members... I had always imagined a bard could charm his way in, but maybe not? | |

| A Drow not a member of a Noble Quel'lar is a commoner or 'Shebali' - the word is also used for 'rogue' (as in the class) and they aren't regarded as slaves. The Noble Quel'lar will recruit from the Shebali caste if they see fit, with varying requirements, standards, methods etc depending on the tastes of the individual Quel'lar (and it's Ilharess and House Masters, more to the point).
As for Shebali being jerks to random slaves, it's all good, unless you actually manage to break someone more important's favorite toy at which point reparations/retaliation depending on value, level of insult etc are due.

| I envision him as more than a common drow, though. I don't think many commoners make a living playing music and dabbling in magic, and just all around being a snob. Do drow hop houses? Should I pick a noble house of sorts for him to have left? | |

| There are plenty of Noble Drow I've seen start who aren't from one of the local major Quel'lar. The destruction of Maerimydra left almost all it's Quel'lar with untenably low numbers (canonically the only one left with appreciable assets is Dhuur'nirv (sp?) - it's assumed player Quel'lar like Zau'afin and Dabel'kith have either manged to claw their way back, or into existence I believe).
If you character isn't from Maerimydra then it's entirely feasible he is an exile (self-imposed or otherwise) or from a 'Dead House' destroyed by a Quel'lar war or an over enthusiastic internal dispute. If I recall correctly Menzo's edict against House wars is fairly unique to that city and even there the ruling House broke it on the sly.
If he's an exile he could have offended someone powerful in his own House, or a more powerful entity such as the Yath, leading House, Sorcere (wizard's 'academy'), Melee Magthere (fighter's 'guild') or similar. Or he might've stepped into the wrong one-way portal from a city under, say, Chult or somewhere similarly Very Far Away. Depends on what you've established thus far really.
Edit: As for House hopping, yes it happens. It's happened between the player ones ingame. It's a BIG deal in Drow society. Balors were summoned over at least one Dalelands instance I believe. Balors.

| I suggest you play for a bit before you jump in a house. Figure out what you want to do and decide which is right for you both ICly and OOCly. There is no hurry or rush. Take your time and learn about everything. It will serve you better in the long run. | |

| No reason to jump in to one of the Quellars ... lots of good RP can be had without... Plus it is quite interesting watching the Quellars play their games... an enterprising Ilythiiri can do lots of playing the line between... just dont get caught. LOL Shadow | |
