| the fall of Freehaven
last night screeches could be heard in the sky over Shadowdale as a gigantic form flew over town towards Fox Ridge and circled back... only to dissapear in the clouds above.
The defenders of Shadowdale assembled all their manpower to face an expected attack. Barricades were erected, the Militia assembled together with the Chauntean field Guardians, Lathander Knights and the Akh Velahr soldiers... nervously awaiting signs of an attack that was about to come.
in the meantime, a wounded merchant made his way into town, who was trying to break the blockade of Freehaven to make some extra coin on the dried out market there. His greed proved to be his downfall when he ran afoul of a massing horde near Freehaven.
Some of the defenders from shadowdale made their way into the Daggerhills, only to see churning dark clouds gathering over the hilltops to the North. They encountered large Groups of Undead who were shambling towards the north with a clear purpose... and tried to fight their way slowly northwards
The dark clouds continued to gather and as the Heroes closed on the northern hills, making their way in the dark of the night, they could see lightning strokes shooting out of the clouds downwards, illuminating the nightsky. Inside the clouds dozens upon dozens of dark flying forms circled Overhead.
They reached Freehaven and their beleagured defenders, who saw the Undead Horde slowly approaching from the East and another large force from the West. The defenders made themselves ready and hid behind their newly build ditches and stone-enforced pallisades, equipped with holy water and steel. As the undead Horde drew closer, burning chunks of molten stones began to rain from the sky and batter the defenders severely...
Serveral defenders fell to this fiery hell of meteor swarms that set all houses on fire and battered the defensive palisades. The Undead closed in.. lumbering behind the force advancing from the east was a gigantic skeleton of some lizardlike creature, towering high over all of the attacking force. Its head circled by flying dark creatures.
The horde swarmed in force upon the battered and burned defenders as some were trying frantically to out the fires that were started by the meteor swarms. A seemingly unending number of skeletal Knights, Zombie giants and even worse undead fell upon them and tore at ther living flesh.
Many undead fell to their defense but in the end they had to retreat from this onslaught of clear superior numbers into the tunnels below and gathered their forces there, as they tried to regroup and to help fallen comrades back up again.
Smoke soon drifted into the lower tunnels from the fires above and forced the defender even deeper into the lower tunnels.
The Defenders made a stand in the tunnels above the entrance to Freehaven, using the close quarters to their advantage. Dozens upon dozens of preset holy traps went off as lesser undead like ghouls, skeletons and zombies lumbered into them and perished very fast.. only after all traps were sprung, the more advanced and dangerous undead closed in again. As the Defenders held the tunnels, the Undead used fire magic again to start fire in the wooden enforced underground structure and soon the tunnels were choked with smoke again, with more smoke coming down from the higher tunnels.. being blown in by unseen winds.
The Defenders were forced to retreat once again to the gates of Freehaven. As the first undead came into the entrance tunnel to Freehaven and were engaged by the Thayan golems and more holy traps went off, the Red Wizards used prepared spells to collapse the tunnel closing the entrance to Freehaven. With the tunnels closed to the surface the defenders had some time to catch their breath and to take in the situation…
Which way out? Some mentioned the tunnels to the underdark…
As the defenders discussed their options and panic began to rose in the settlement, serveral incorporeal undead began to drift through the collapsed tunnels attacking the remaining Golems.
More shadows, wraiths and spectres reached through the closed gates, othere appeared from other angles out of the tunnels and fell upon the now totally panicked citizens.
Hell broke out as terrorized citizens ran screaming through the streets of Freehaven trying to escape their incorporeal persuers and running for their lives..
The golems and remaining Militia and Mercenaries as well as the aiding Heroes tried to fend of as many of the undead as possible. Many of the poor killed slaves, who had nowhere to run and other felled citizens soon rose again as spawns of their killers, leaving their corporeal bodies behind and setting off to hunt and to kill more living, adding to the numbers of the attackers. The Freehaven citizens soon found themselves fleeing from their own friends and Family who had joined the undead horde in their death.
The Red Wizards, guarded by their Thayan Knight made their way back to the enclave and closed of that section of Freehaven.
The Waukeenar priests, aided by fiery mercenaries tried their best at defending their quarter of the settlement and gathered as many merchants and citizens as possible and gave them refuge in their temple, calling them to safety.
Then, serveral Undead spellcasters slipped out of the ethereal plane and began raising the husks of the slain and send them as well against their families and friends.. one of the arrived undead wizards wore tattered red Robes of a Red Wizard over his mummified body, some citizens swore they recognized the creature as the former Thayan Khazark Rumark, who had disappeared months ago. The former Kharzark screamed in throaty tongue and commanded the golems he created over the years to kill every living in sight. The Thayan Golems, who had until then, helped the defenders so effectively with their immunity to the undead attacks, now turned against them and killed every one not being able to save himself.
The Heroes went to the Enclave and demanded to be led inside, only after some time elapse did the Red Wizards emerge, flanked by their well armed Thayan Knights and made their way to the Underdark trade emporium where they met with the Dable´kith guards. They commanded the Knights to gather as many citizens of Freehaven as possible to come with them through the Underdark and to safety.
As serveral Knights went to save as many citizens as possible, the Red Wizards explained to the gathered Heroes that the offer and deal struck with House Dable´kith only extended to Thayan Citizens and Citizens of Freehaven. As the Heroes argued with the Red Wizards and nearly came to blows with them, shouts from their friends reached them about an alternate route out this hell. Appearantly a small group of heroes had used the distraction of the attack to gather as many slaves as they could and rescue them. They made their way out through a smuggler tunnel who was collapsed after they exited into the welcoming sun of dawn.
The Red Wizards left with their Knights and dozens of citizens escorted by Dable´kith Guards.
The Waukeenar managed to save some merchants and citizens through a tunnel dug for them by Duergar miners out from their temple into the sewers and beyond… making their way hastily out of the Daggerhills with little more losses.
So Freehaven has fallen… and now lies in the hand of the Undead horde, the fate of many citizens remains uncertain.
(a big thank you to DM_Sapphire and ADM Architect in assisting with this Event, you were a huge help!)

| That night Wester had settled himself in for the night and made himself comfortable in the Old Skull Inn. He had taken to playing a game of cribbage with one of the locals, an older fellow. The echoing screech startles him from his game as he instinctive spins himself to face the door and take grip of his blade hilt. Quickly, he stood from the table but then hesitated, turning back to his cribbage opponent to excuse himself. Yet before Wes could opened his mouth to utter his goodbyes the old man simply raised his hand and told him to go and not to fuss over niceties. Wester would nod curtly in appreciation and hurry out of the tavern.
Stepping from the tavern door he'd witness the militia muster and erect barricades. As a green recruit of the militia, whom he joined not more than two days ago, he'd hustle to join them and got ready for what was to come. With some hastily devised fortifications, Wester the waits out the night, taking sleep shift patterns with the other militia. As dawn broke and early morns light chased away the darkness stories would start to reach Shadowdale of what had befell in the north.
A stream of light beams in from the crack of the tent and falls across Wester as he slumbers. The tent open folds back with the hand of a silhouetted figure. He kicks Westers feet waking him. Without word, Wester rises from bed and shuffles from the tent leaving the other militia man to take his place. Passing by a fading camp fire, he eavesdrops the the morbid conversation of Freehaven. He stumbles forward in shock as the realization of what has occurred hit him like a strike of lightening and he vomits. Wiping his mouth he makes his way to the northern wall to witness the black smoke rise up on the horizon. The cold grasp of depression would engulf Wester, for this is the second time he has lost his home to the undead.

Carefully navigating the undermaze with troops at the front - sides - and rear of the group they would emerge from the Tybold mine. Standing at the gate to the surface Llilith would count the surfacers as they exited; making sure that everyone was accounted for. Directing them towards the safety of Rimwood and Ironhall before she, and her troops, disappear back into the underdark. Only the Red Wizards and their Thayan Guards would emerge from the Tybold mine.. not turning to Rimwood and the elves of Myth Drannor who banned all Red Wizards from their lands, nor their allies the Ironhouses.

Heidi Shepard heads out with the citizens and then promptly makes her way to the river when it is safe to do so.
