A letter to Wakefield

A letter is placed on Wakefield's desk, the wax seal on the letter is marked with a symbol of the Zhentarim.

Quote :

It has come to our attention that you investigate the recent mass murder in the Old Skull Inn. We request that if you wish to continue to pursue this case that relay your findings to the Zhentarim. It has also been brought our attention that you posses two of the murderer's gloves, I request one is delivered to us so that we may attempt a scrying for this murderer. You may keep the other for the time being to aid in your investigation. If you do not wish to continue this investigation then we request you turn over all evidence so that this murderer can be captured.

*Wakefield sends a small parcel with a letter attached. The glove which seemed to show signs of scuffing from a knife handle is inside.*

Grimm seems to feel that my office has been singled out in this matter by the killer, which I tend to agree with. Because of that, I would indeed like to continue the search for the man currently being called "Mr. Smiles," in any way I'm able. My findings were included in the report sent to you by Thomas Grimm, which I reviewed personally in case any fact had been left out. I am currently working on tests to learn of the poison used in the woman's death, and will alert you to anything I turn up.

The glove inside this package appears to have been used to grip the knife tightly. It may prove to be the more directly useful one for scrying, though I am unfamiliar with that process. As I lack the magical abilities you are seeking to use, I will need to use the standard, mundane forms of investigation. At this time, I believe it would be most important to identify the victims in order to begin linking them to the murderer. I hope that the Zhentarim have had time and enough soldiers to seek out reports of missing men and woman. If so, it would greatly help me to have a list of the names, jobs and homes of the victims.

As always, the Wakefield Investigation Office will work with the law enforcement of Shadowdale and will not interfere with your own pursuit of this killer. Our goal remains the same on both sides: to capture a dangerous man.
