| A pair of elven scouts, performing a wide-ranging sweep of the Cormanthor, fail to return from their patrol. Any search party sent out to retrace their steps would find the following: - Spoiler:
A pair of elven corpses are dangling from a stout oak in the depths of the forest - far from any major travel routes, but evidently meant to be found. One hangs by his neck, riddled with cuts and bruises; a massive gash that caved in his chest looks to the the fatal blow. The other is strung up by his ankles, as he has no neck left from which to dangle. His body looks undamaged except for the pecking of the crows, and his head sits on the ground below - a rolled-up parchment stuffed in its mouth. The ears are conspicuously missing from both corpses, obviously cut cleanly off after death.
Whomever arrives on the scene first and claims the note would see the following: - Spoiler:
Your attempt to burn the Temple of Bane was pathetic. I will be collecting twenty elf-ears in retribution unless you deliver the attacker to Shadowdale for trial.
Anyone present with a survival skill (not roll) of at least twenty would note the following: - Spoiler:
There was a single, large assailant, the size of an orc or even a small ogre. He was heavy, and wore plated boots; his tracks lead to the river and disappear. Something was clearly dragged through the reeds at the riverbed - perhaps a small skiff?
Anyone present with a survival skill (not roll) of at least thirty would note the following: - Spoiler:
The attacker took his first opponent by surprise, which is unusual given his large size. The lack of wounds on the elf's body suggest that his head was off as soon as the fight had begun. The other elf, however, seems to be a different story. The large number of tracks in the area, the number of wounds on his body, and the blood in the soil suggest that the attacker was playing with him for some time before finishing him off - as if he enjoyed giving him the illusion of a chance of survival. The mortal wound to the chest appears to be caused by impalement with a greatsword, but the smaller cuts suggest that the wielder could handle the large weapon with precision. | *Walking around the Cormanthor, Beriel finds the two corpses and the note. He frowns, take it, and bring it to Myth to whichever first ranger or defender he can find.*

| At around the same time, the Abbot Elijah escorted another two elves safely back to Myth Drannor. Earlier, the monk had agreed to lend aid to the two elves in their attempt to stop a nefarious summoning ritual deep in the overgrowth near Shadowdale. The summoning was successfully halted but the trio was ambushed by what appeared to be a yuan-ti high priestess on their way out. The vrael was clearly heavily warded, spoke intimidating words and demanded gold, lest their lives be forfeited. Weighing their options given the circumstance, the trio parted with gold and left the vrael to her maniacal ramblings.
As Elijah spied the two elven corpses dangling from the oak tree, he couldn't help but shudder as a tingling chill ran down his spine. It could have been worse...

| Just up the river past the boatman, a dark and bloody stain lay upon the path. As the river rushes down stream, a sudden rust color mixes with the normal greenish blue hues of the water.
Further downstream, where the river become shallow enough to cross, one would notice limbs stuck in the brush on the sides of the river. Enough arms and legs to determine that at least two people had been dismembered before being thrown into the river.
When the elves' heads were found, the ears would be cut off, and it would be easy to determine that these two unfortunates had been barely more than children.

| If the parents children should pause in their busy afternoon and if some friendly adventurers were to offer their help to the families, they'd begin to find the bodies. The children would be found in various places. Their poor little figures would seem to be sleeping if it weren't for the fact that their eyes remained open and unseeing. A purple staining of something stains their faces, obviously some sort of sweet berry tart that they'd gotten from somewhere. Their bodies are unharmed and there remains nothing of the tart or pastries that they'd eaten except for the mess on their faces.
Of the group of dead scattered about, only one of the children would have any outer injury. Upon close inspection, it would seem that the child's ear was cut a while after death when the blood had already gone cold and sticky. Further inspection would lead to a final discovery before clues ran out. In the bark of random nearby trees, small carvings near the base of the trees could only be a simplified rendering of a symbol of Bane.{{ **Approved by Umbra! }}

| When the Abbot Elijah heard the hushed whispers of the killings from the boatman and some guards, he hurried back to the orphanage in a flurry of steps. Gathering all the children in the common room, he counted them a few times with bated breath before heaving a soft sigh of relief. He then instructed the Lathanderite knights to step up patrols of the orphanage and the surrounding areas for added measure. | |

| Fearing for the safety of her own children Alarice ensures they are safe before travelling to the area the bodies were found to see if she could learn anything new.
The only thing that occurred to her was that if these were children from Myth Drannor surely their parents would have mentioned it. However if these were young elves just starting out on a life of adventure that they were ill prepared for, it would make a lot more sense.
