| I can answer that one. Adventurers donated enough to money when the town was liberated to keep the entire place running for 13 months. Considering tax money is still coming in, continued donations that I know of in excess of 500k (cause I added that much myself) and possibly others donating as well the bills can likely be payed out of reserve to fill the gaps for the next two years on a strictly "based on established costs" front.
Beyond that a significant part of Shadowdale's security comes from volunteer forces from the Churches of Lathandar, Chauntea, and Helm. The only steep cost Shadowdale should have for security is the Black Hound Mercenaries.
Also remember that the expensive part of raising a militia has already been done. The dwarves donated hundreds of suits of armor for the initial outfitting. This means that the huge upfront cost of raising a militia is out of the way.. leaving only the nominal cost of paying someone to walk patrol.

| And certain of us players have done a ton of RP about getting trade routes opened with various other friendly (or at least neutral) towns and cities. I would also assume that the elven NPC patrols are at least somewhat countering the Zhent NPC patrols (hard to know this since none of them are actually visible in game...so just an assumption). | |

If there are elven and Zhent patrols going at it. Could there be away for the player base to tip the balance one way or the other? For example Ravossel may be a Druid, and all neutral like, she is still a elf, and they are still her kind still being attacked. Just a thought is all.

Getting more DM oriented threads about what NPCs are doing around the dales would be nice. It would bring more life to the forums, and perhaps the server itself, which conversely would make the PC base more lively and interactive in their own community.

The Inner dale is relatively safe and well-guarded by the current militia and frequenting adventurers, The outer dales and traderoutes leading into the dale from and to the outlying farms are in bad condition though (with the exception of the one leading to Zhentil Keep). With the retreat of the Zhentarim their monstrous hordes of orcs and halfbloods partially deserted and scattered into the hinterlands, where they now build dozends of small marrauding bands and waylay farmers and caravans. This has led to some of the other dales stopping or reducing trade with Shadowdale because of repeated loss of life and good] [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] - Quote :
- In the past few weeks, more than a few caravans have not arrived in Shadowdale. All have been found abandoned or destroyed, and all have been completely looted of their valuables. It would seem that they have faced threats on every road, powerful enough to defeat the guards. Though nothing public has been announced yet, business is hurt, and the public is growing wary of traveling the roads. Merchants feel unsafe to leave the confines of the city.
Given the loss of trade and reconstruction costs, how is the city paying its 200 some-odd soldiers (plus other expenses)? Is the homeless census data still accurate? Is the House of Plenty orphanage full? How close to opening is the "Future Shadowdale Basic School"? Does Shadowdale ever have town meetings and the like?
Also, I have a plot idea for Shadowdale that I'd like to talk with you about. I'll send a PM your way shortly after posting this. Any chance at answers to these questions? I can provide some insight about the school. We're holding off on building the interior because there is some ongoing rp about where it might finally be placed. Anyone interested might forum rp asking around about the school, or ask around in-game. Is there any chance on getting the "RP Guide to Shadowdale" updated? Items of special interest might be: - How do NPC's react to known problem races being in town? - How do NPC's react to weapons drawn in town, and/or adventurers running to and fro? - What are the names and positions of the people (PC/NPC) currently in charge of SD? - What is the current mood or "vibe" in the town? There have been great strides in the implementation of a town hall and the building of walls, but also great setbacks with plagues and (apparent?) food shortages and the (apparent?) salting of the northern vales. How do the citizens feel about going hungry while the mages get a new tower, for example? How do they feel about the new walls? About the Selunite construction? About the absence of any former or current Harvestmistress? Thanks in advance for answers to these important questions.

| I think I will be in a better position to answer these questions about the town itself after the upcoming series of events that will be happening in Shadowdale. Some of these questions will be addressed by the outcomes of those events which are open to player influence as to their outcomes.
I have asked the DMs responsible for the events to post up publicly when they will be happening.
A final note, I'm close to completing my map for Shadowdale moving forward as well and welcome any additional input that members of the community have.

| *Trip is returning to SD after a long hiatus in MD/Lathanderville and a grueling entanglement in Malboldge. If all goes well I should have him on tonight and maybe Friday too.* | |
